راس ساعت هشت شب از شرکت بيرون آمدم و حلزون باغچهء روبروي خانهء ما تصميم گرفت حالا که هوا کمي خنک تر شده است از لاکش بيرون بيايد. ساعت هشت و پنج دقيقه موتور ماشين گرم شده بود و من مي دانستم که امشب يک پوند از کبابي که خريده ام را از فريزر خارج مي کنم و بعد از اينکه چهل و پنج ثانيه در مايکرو ويو يخش را باز مي کنم روي شعلهء خيلي آرام کباب پز مي گذارم تا مغز پخت شود. در همين لحظه حلزون باغچهء خانهء ما هم در راستاي تصميمي که گرفته است شاخکهايش را بيرون از لاک در هوا مي جنباند. ساعت هشت و سي و هفت دقيقه دخترک کوکي فروشنده با يک لبخند کوکي از من تشکر مي کند که کادوي تولد تو را بعد از يک ماه پس مي دهم و قبل از اينکه کوکش تمام شود و به زندگي واقعي اش برگردد تمام پولم را پس مي دهد و شب خوبي را برايم آرزو مي کند. حلزون باغچهء خانهء ما هم در آرزوي يک شب بياد ماندني بالاخره از لاکش بيرون مي آيد.
ساعت نه و دو دقيقه پدال گاز را فشار مي دهم و کم کم ايراد طرز فکر ايده آليستي خودم را مي فهمم. ولي حلزون باغچهء خانهء ما مثل من بيکار نيست تا هي با خودش به اين چيزهاي تخمي فکر کند تصميم مي گيرد در اين شب باشکوه از باغچهء اين طرف به باغچهء آن طرف سفر کند و ببيند در آن سوي پياده رو دنيا چگونه است. ساعت نه و بيست و هشت دقيقه من بي اختيار اسمي را که تو رويم گذاشته بودي بلند بلند صدا کردم، بلافاصله چشمهايم را بستم و ذهنم را از هر چه که مربوط به تو بود پاک کردم، چشمانم را باز کردم و نصفهء ليمو را با تمام قدرتي که داشتم روي چنجه هاي يخ زده چلاندم. حلزون باغچهء ما حالا ديگر کاملا از چمنهاي اين سمت پياده رو خارج شده است و به سمت دنياي جديدي مي تازد. ساعت ده شب زندگي همچنان تخمي است، مخصوصا در ذهن من. خيلي تخمي است که من بتوانم در هر لحظه اي اراده کنم که دلم براي تو تنگ بشود يا نشود. تصميم مي گيرم بخندم، و لبخند مي زنم. تصميم مي گيرم به تو فکرکنم، و بلافاصله پشيمان مي شوم و ديگر فکر نمي کنم. حلزون باغچهء ما حالا کم کم فکر مي کند نکند هيچ وقت به مقصد نرسد، ولي هنوز هوا خوب است و به راهش ادامه مي دهد. ساعت ده و سي و هفت دقيقه، دقيقه شمار ماشين رخت شويي به صفر مطلق رسيد و من به اين نتيجه رسيدم که احساسات انساني با رياضيات رابطهء چنداني ندارد. هر چقدر هم که با حرفهاي قشنگ و خوشرنگ بتوان درگيري و سردرگمي را رنگ کرد و به جاي خودشناسي و خداشناسي با قيمتهاي استثنائي فروخت شادي لحظات با تو بودن هميشه از ثروت من گرانتر است. حلزون باغچهء خانهء ما هم حالا يک جورهايي کم آورده است، و دو دل است که تا آنسوي صحراي پياده رو ادامه دهد يا باز هم به گهخوري بيفتد و به سيزي آشناي اين سوي باغچه برگردد. ساعت يازده و يک دقيقه ماشين خشک کن يک دلار از اعتبار کارت من کم مي کند، حلزون باغچهء ما يک لحظه خيال مي کند که زندگي اش همين حالا زير پاي چپ من تمام مي شود، فواره هاي خودکار باغچه ها ناگهان روشن مي شوند و من که در فکر تو تار و پود افکارم از هم گسيخته شده است افسار خودم را از دست مي دهم و سر خر را به سمت ديگر پياده رو کج مي کنم، و حلزون باغچهء خانهء ما خيلي خيلي تخمي از مرگ حتمي نجات پيدا مي کند و تصميم مي گيرد قبل از هر اتفاق ديگري عقب نشيني کند.
ساعت يازده و پنجاه و نه دقيقه شب همه جا امن و امان است غير از مغز من که تا انفجار فاصله اي ندارد. لباسهاي داغ من در شکم گرد خشک کن مرا صدا مي کنند و من براي فرار از فکر تو سوت زنان دمپايي هايم را مي پوشم. ساعت دوازده و سيزده دقيقه و چهارده ثانيه حلزون باغچهء خانهء ما قبل از اينکه به چمنها برسد زير دمپايي هاي من قرياد می زند قرچ، ومی شکند و له می شود واز فشاری که به من وارد می شود تمام اشکهايم در همان ثانيه تبخيرمی شوند. در بخار اشکهايم کنار پياده رو می نشينم و به بقايای حلزون باغچهء خانهء مان قول می دهم داستان اين شب بيادماندني را حتما يک جايي بنويسم تا هيچ وقت يادم نرود که زندگي چقدر تخمي است؛ و اينها رادر ساعت يک و هفده دقيقهء بامداد در جوار اقيانوس آرام می نويسم.
